The Panchatantra is a collection of ancient stories originally written in Sanskrit. According to legend, a king worried about the future of his three foolish sons entrusted their education to a wise and versatile teacher named Vishnusarman. Through engaging stories, Vishnusarman taught them how to live wisely, find happiness, and achieve success in life. The word Pancha means five, and Tantra refers to doctrines of conduct or modes of action. These five principles are firmness of mind, creation of prosperity, earnest effort, friendship, and wisdom. The Panchatantra presents Nitishastra—the science of wise living—through simple and memorable tales, mostly featuring animals, making them especially appealing and enjoyable for children.
